Perfect Calamity
04:22
|

Gotta catch the news it's nine AM
I think the world is off its meds again
I like to start the day with the newscaster
A cup of coffee and the latest fine disaster
Have you seen today's helping of calamitous confusion
Headin' out the door I'm thinking:
How amusin'
It's a circus in the first degree
Every day an ingenious travesty
I am certain we have just averted a catastrophe
Here comes the next perfect calamity
I'm getting nothing done again
The lunacy's become my trusty friend
The infrastructure's overwhelmed
Cartoon characters at the helm
The politician and the rich man took all of my money
Went cryin' to my congressman he asked me:
But do ya like the entertainment sonny?
It's a circus in the first degree
Every day an ingenious travesty
I am certain we have just averted a catastrophe
Here comes the next perfect calamity
We'll be talkin' 'bout this latest fiasco for days
Wait - another just took its place
It's a circus in the first degree
Every day an ingenious travesty
I am certain we have just averted a catastrophe
Here comes the next perfect calamity
I am fairly certain we've averted a catastrophe
Here comes the next perfect calamity
Here comes the next perfect calamity
Here comes the next perfect calamity

Midnight Movie

There's a wolf out in the yard
And why's my first grade teacher coming up the walk
And what's that in the sky
Looks like a flock of swallows
One eye glances at the clock
Maybe it was something I ate
At any rate this keeps me up too late
Then the next scene follows
The Midnight Movie is on again
Now playing in my brain
Sometimes I fear the screenwriter's insane
Taking notes while peering through the window pane
Now the wolf is gone
But there's a card game going on
I'm in my car...can't find the way back home
And the clock strikes four
When the morning comes
Trying to remember the plot
Too much confusion...no real conclusion...
But I know I'll be tuning in for more

It was a warm day in June...about Seventeen sixty-four
The French had packed it in
And the English were holding down the fort
Out beyond the gate was a match...Ojibwa and the Sauk
Fetch me my wig spoke the commandant
We're gonna take a walk
And they all went down to watch the Indians play
All decked out in charcoal and white clay
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh
Gentlemen lay down your guns it's time to go
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh
Indians and the English what a show
Taking a wrong turn off a stick the ball flies through the gate
Careful Commandant our scalps we fear they'll confiscate
Nonsense...these gents are a sporting lot...
Let 'em in...they'll thank us
No one saw the women by the gate wrapped in Indian blankets
Hey redcoat man...could you let a guy pass through
Cheerio old chief...we've got twenty pence on you
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh
Gentlemen lay down your guns it's time to go
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh
Indians and the English what a show
Taking a drag on his pipe the commandant relaxes
The blankets open up and the women hand out the axes
And the tribes rushed in and twenty men were whacked
And the cries rang out 'cross the Strait Of Mackinac
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh
Gentlemen lay down your guns it's time to go
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh
Indians and the English what a show
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh
Gentlemen lay down your guns it's time to go
Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh
You shoulda seen the Indians and the English go
You never seen nothin' like it daddy-o!

Reilly's Comin'
04:25
|

Lock all your doors Reilly's comin'
Lock all your doors Reilly's comin'
Got off the train in Ashtown
Headed for the Thirsty Shark
He just might make it to your house before dark
He'll drink your whiskey waste your time
His mouth is workin' overtime
I knew him way back when and I...
Hope he don't remember me
Turn out your lights Reilly's comin'
Keep all the cash in sight Reilly's comin'
He'll walk on your flower bed
Fill you with his pointless views
And spill his Moscow Mule on your new shoes
He'll drink your whiskey waste your time
His mouth is workin' overtime
I knew him way back when and I...
Hope he don't remember me
Lock all your doors Reilly's comin'
Lock all your doors Reilly's comin'
He'll curse out your mom on Mother's Day
Kick a cat on Halloween
Spread lies and rumors each day in between

Traveling on a steamer from Jakarta
Standing on the deck she caught my eye
Hair as sparkling as the seas uncharted
A golden girl beneath the angry sky
Sensing here's a story most compelling
Tried to talk her up...she slipped away
Couldn't help but notice by the swelling
Another one would soon be on the way
No prince can wake that girl...she's sleeping...sleeping...
Resting where the ghosts of ancient smugglers hide their gold
For safekeeping
So curious how quick she slipped away
When the typhoon came the ship was shaken to the frame
Ten thousand rivets couldn't hold that thing together
Twenty-seven lives were saved
But one had slipped beneath the waves
So strange the way she suddenly descended
No prince can wake that girl...she's sleeping...sleeping...
Resting where the ghosts of ancient smugglers hide their gold
For safekeeping
So curious how quick she slipped away
Many years went by before they found her
Seems another smuggler pulled a slick one
Heavy yes but not with child...three bars of gold she wore
Ensuring her descent would be a quick one
